GRAVITATIONAL LENSES

It seems large mass structures like whole galaxies, act as lenses for lights way behind them. If early galaxies had a more nebulous distribution of stars and proto-stars, which were sufficiently massive to collapse,  a population of individual black holes could be hard to spot even in our own galaxy ?????????
